The Late-Summer Weekend Rivertown Antioch Has Been Waiting For

Sunday mornings at 3rd and I have a specific sound now: canvas awnings snapping open, crates hitting asphalt, someone's speaker two stalls over cycling through the same three songs. The California Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 9 AM to 1 PM at the I Street and 3rd Street parking lot with 25 family farmers. If you live here, you already know which stand has the good stone fruit by 9:15.

What you may not have registered yet is that this summer is the first one in a long time where a Rivertown Saturday and a Rivertown Sunday can be strung together without a single car trip out of the district.

The thesis, in one paragraph

For years the phrase "Waterfront Dining District" was more of a plan than a place. Pieces were missing, corners were dark, and a Saturday night walk down 2nd usually ended at the same three doors. In the last six months that has quietly changed. The patio that has been in permitting for three years is finally scheduled. The building everyone assumed was gone is coming back. The theater that anchors the block hit its rescue number. The result is a walkable weekend loop with real texture, and it is worth knowing which pieces to lean on.

The waterfront strip is finally continuous

The biggest change is at the foot of the marina. The Council previously approved the rental of land near the Antioch Marina adjacent to Smith's Landing Seafood Grill to McCauley for an outdoor dining patio, approximately 1,300 square feet in size. McCauley said the concept took over three years to approve and plans were submitted for permits earlier this month, with an opening planned for spring of 2026. If you have not walked out to the marina point in a few months, do it. The umbrellas and seating change the read of that whole edge from parking lot to something closer to a promenade.

A block inland, the other slow-burn story is Mac's. Mac's Old House is located at 3100 E. 18th Street in Antioch. It sits just outside the historic core, but it functions as part of the same Saturday-night gravity. Mac's was officially purchased by Joe Martinez and Ron Harrison, with a goal to preserve Mac's as much as possible with some updates, aiming for a June 2026 reopening exactly one year after closing. Martinez called it iconic, noting the building has been in business for 42 years. The menu carries over. If you have been telling out-of-town family that Mac's is gone, update the message.

Between those two anchors sit the pieces that have been quietly running the whole time: Monica's at Riverview on the dock at the foot of I Street, Smith's Landing itself, Guadalajara Taqueria, Chill Tea and Coffee, and Smash Burgers on the corner of W. 2nd and I. The point is not that any single restaurant is new. The point is that you can now string them.

A weekend template you can actually walk

Use this as a starting shape, not a prescription. Adjust for kid schedules and how hot the afternoon gets.

The reason the market anchors Sunday and not Saturday is worth internalizing. The market is brought to you by the California Farmers Market Association, Celebrate Antioch Foundation and the City of Antioch. The vendor mix leans toward the growers who work the Brentwood and Oakley farms during the week, so Sundays get the freshest carry-over. Get there before 10:30 if you want the tomatoes.

Where the indoors picks up

The block that used to go quiet after dinner has two live rooms now.

El Campanil Theatre, 602 W. 2nd Street, almost lost a year of programming and did not. The El Campanil Theatre Preservation Foundation's recent GoFundMe campaign exceeded its $50,000 fundraising goal, with the Keep the Arts Alive in Antioch campaign launched in late fall to supplement 2026 operating costs. As of March 25, 2026, a total of $65,190 had been raised from 411 gifts. Originally opened in 1928, the theatre is a cultural landmark presenting live performances, films, and educational programs. That is the difference between a marquee that flickers and a marquee that is actually on.

The Lemon Tree, 514 W. 2nd Street, is the newer variable. The Lemon Tree describes itself as a creative community offering drop-ins, curated events and retail finds, located at 514 W. 2nd Street. Programming rotates. As one recent example on the calendar, a family night event began at 7:00 PM with doors at 6:30 PM and popcorn and lemonade included with admission. Check the calendar the week you want to go. It is the sort of room that either has something you want or nothing at all, with limited middle ground.

And on the retail side, Timeless Elegance Vintage Store held its ribbon cutting on February 25 at 204 G Street. Owner Gladys Torres also runs Alliance Estate Sales, which means the shop gets a constant stream of new inventory. If you have written off G Street as a stroll, walk it again.

A useful test: pick a Saturday night in September, then try to plan the evening without leaving the eight blocks between the marina and H Street. Two years ago that was hard. This year it is the default.

The season closer at Waldie Plaza

Late September has a natural bookend. The Boots and BBQ Festival features live music, a BBQ competition, the Rotary of the Delta Cornhole Tournament, a family-friendly Kid Zone, local Rivertown restaurants, line dancing with instruction, BBQ food trucks, and artisan vendors, running Saturday, September 26th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM in Rivertown Antioch at Waldie Plaza. If you have kids in a fall sport, block that Saturday now. Waldie sits right next to the railroad tracks and the river, which means the sound carries and the wind picks up around four. Plan the cornhole slot before the breeze.

For the shoulder weeks, the Chamber's calendar keeps things moving. Witches Day Out is set for Saturday, October 17, 2026, with a witch party, food and prizes, a scavenger hunt through shops, and only 200 tickets sold. That is a hard cap. It sells.

A few practical notes

Parking behaves differently in Rivertown than in the newer commercial pockets. The G Street lot is the swing space, and it is about to get busier. Improvements to the G Street parking lot are budgeted at roughly $100,000, with the cost of the new dining deck separate as part of the restaurant improvements. If you have a preferred spot for market Sundays, expect to adjust.

The Sunday market is a habit, not a destination. The regulars are the ones who buy two bags, walk them home, and come back for coffee at Chill. That routine only works if you live inside the walking radius. If that describes you, you already know. If it describes someone you know who has been talking about selling and moving farther out, the walkable radius of downtown is worth pricing in before they list.
