After the Sand Creek Road Raley's, Brentwood's Grocery Run Splits by Format

October 29, 2026

"Thoughtful stewardship sometimes means opening stores, and sometimes it means making difficult decisions to close them." That's how Raley's spokesperson Chelsea Carbahal explained the company's latest closures to SFGATE in August. One of them was the store at 2400 Sand Creek Road, which Carbahal confirmed would close permanently on Nov. 3.

The store had served Brentwood for 24 years, according to Contra Costa News. It was not the city's only grocery option, though. Over the past 20 months, the grocery stores opening in Brentwood have been a warehouse club, an international market and a planned public market. The store on its way out was a conventional supermarket. So shopping after Raley's comes down to which kind of store you need, and each kind now has its own street.

What's closing, and what the company said about it

Contra Costa News reported that Raley's told workers about the closure on a Monday morning in early August. The Mercury News later reported that a state filing put the job losses at 51, with the cuts expected to be permanent.

Raley's never gave one specific reason. Its statement pointed to "local market conditions and the long-term financial sustainability of this location." The Brentwood store was one of six Raley's closures statewide reported in SFGATE's August coverage. A Petaluma store is next, scheduled to close by Jan. 26, 2027.

Oakley shoppers asked the obvious follow-up. The Press put it to the company, asking about the Raley's at 2077 Main St. in Oakley. Carbahal said Raley's "continuously evaluates store performance, lease terms, and market conditions" and had "no further closures to share at this time." That Oakley store is still the nearest Raley's for East County shoppers who want to keep the same brand.

If you filled prescriptions at the Sand Creek Road store, call Raley's directly to find out where your file went. None of the closure statements named a receiving pharmacy.

Brentwood's grocery additions since 2025 have been other formats

Here's how the change built up:

  1. March 7, 2025: Costco opened its Brentwood warehouse at 5151 Heidorn Ranch Road.
  2. February 2026: Namaste Plaza, an international grocery store, opened at 6842 Lone Tree Way in Lone Tree Crossings.
  3. April 2026: Raley's closed its Antioch store on Lone Tree Way, which had been open since 1979.
  4. June 2026: The Brentwood City Council voted 5–0 to approve The Grove at Brentwood, a 35,690-square-foot public market planned for the southeast corner of Walnut Boulevard and Oak Street.
  5. Nov. 3, 2026: The scheduled closing date for the Sand Creek Road Raley's.

Over those 20 months, Brentwood gained a warehouse club, an international grocer and an approved public market. It lost a conventional supermarket, and nearby Antioch lost another. Very little of what opened replaces a full weekly shop on its own, which is why the Raley's closure changes where people drive more than it changes how many stores the city has.

The map you're working with now

These are the remaining grocery stores closest to the old Raley's, grouped by the road they sit on.

Corridor Store Address Format
Sand Creek Road Sprouts Farmers Market 2325 Sand Creek Rd, The Streets of Brentwood Specialty and natural foods
Lone Tree Way Trader Joe's 5451 Lone Tree Way Specialty
Lone Tree Way WinCo Foods 6700 Lone Tree Way Full-service, with deli, bakery and seafood departments
Lone Tree Way Namaste Plaza 6842 Lone Tree Way, Lone Tree Crossings International grocery
Balfour Road Safeway 3110 Balfour Rd Conventional supermarket
Balfour Road FoodMaxx 4461 Balfour Rd Conventional supermarket
Heidorn Ranch Road Costco 5151 Heidorn Ranch Rd Warehouse club
Oakley Safeway 998 Laurel Rd Conventional supermarket
Oakley Raley's 2077 Main St Conventional supermarket

Sand Creek Road still has groceries. Sprouts sits at 2325 Sand Creek Road in The Streets of Brentwood, the same stretch as the Raley's at 2400. But Sprouts is a different kind of store. For a conventional supermarket, the nearest options in town are now the Safeway and FoodMaxx on Balfour Road. WinCo on Lone Tree Way covers the full-department shop, and its store page lists a deli, bakery and seafood counter.

Lone Tree Way now has the widest mix of any single road on the list, with Trader Joe's, WinCo and Namaste Plaza all within a short drive of each other. For many households, a weekly shop that used to happen in one Raley's trip will now likely mean two stops, one for staples and one for whatever their specialty store handles best.

The Saturday option that doesn't depend on a lease

One fresh-food source in Brentwood has never relied on a chain's real estate decisions. The Brentwood Farmers' Market, run by the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association, is listed as year-round, Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at 655 First Street downtown. The first Saturday after the scheduled closing is Nov. 7.

Farm stands help for a few more weeks. Smith Family Farm says its Brentwood fruit stand is open daily through November, selling autumn produce like apples, persimmons, pomegranates, pears and squash. The farm's homepage says the stand stays open into the beginning of December, so check before you plan a December visit. The farm's Christmas tree lot and country store open Nov. 28.

What happens to 2400 Sand Creek Road

The space Raley's is leaving anchors Sand Creek Crossing. As of October 2026, the center's other tenants included HomeGoods, T.J. Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Round Table Pizza, The UPS Store, See's Candies and Krispy Kreme. Those stores give people reasons to keep coming to the center once the anchor space goes dark.

Councilmember Jovita Mendoza told The Press that city economic development staff are working with the property owner to find possible tenants. No tenant has been announced.

The closest example points to a long wait. When Raley's left its Antioch store on Lone Tree Way in April, Contra Costa News reported in early August that the building was still vacant.

The Grove at Brentwood won't fill the gap soon either. Contra Costa News reported that its tenants weren't known when the council approved it, and the applicant said permitting would take months, with construction possibly slipping into 2027. It's also designed as a multi-tenant food and retail hall, not a supermarket.

For the near future, then, shopping without the Sand Creek Road Raley's means Balfour Road for a conventional supermarket, Lone Tree Way for WinCo and specialty stores, Sprouts on Sand Creek Road, Costco on Heidorn Ranch Road, and First Street on Saturday mornings.
